Difference between Aerobic and Anaerobic Respiration

Respiration is a process which involves exchange of gases and breakdown of the food material in the presence or absence of oxygen. Based on the availability of gas respiration is of two types.

1. Aerobic Respiration : The process of breakdown of food material in the presence of oxygen gas. It results in the release of large amount of energy. Aerobic respiration is found in higher organisms like mammals .

2. Anaerobic respiration : The process involves the breakdown of the food material in the absence of oxygen  gas.
